Head of the Digital Transformation Office Ali Taha Koc appealed to Turkey citizen to delete WhatsApp application. This is in response to Facebook’s new chat app privacy policy.
In the latest rules, WhatsApp will share its data with Facebook. However, this rule does not apply to users in the UK and the European Union. This led Ali Taha to suggest that Turks use “national and local” apps like BiP and Dedi.
“The difference between EU countries and others in terms of data privacy is unacceptable! As we have quoted in the Information and Communication Security Guidelines, applications of foreign origin carry significant risks related to data security,” said Taha Ali as quoted by Aljazeera, Monday (11 / 1/2021).
Turkey: #deletewhatsApp
“That’s why we need to protect our digital data with local and national software and develop it according to our needs. Let’s not forget that Turkish data will be in Turkey, thanks to local and national solutions.”
After writing this on his personal Twitter, Turkish social media appeared the hashtag #deletewhatsApp. The number of downloads of local Turkish chat applications has also increased significantly.
BiP owned by Turkish telecom giant Turkcell got 1.12 million users in 24 hours and has 53 million users globally, according to Turkcell data. BiP itself is available in 192 countries.
Apart from inviting users to move from WhatsApp, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s media office decided not to use the WhatsApp platform.
